New MP3-eating Trojan deletes all your Music

•August 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Just about everyone today has their own digital music collection. I have about 20 plus GB of music. I like to collect high quality music. But what if all your music collection that you have been collecting for years gets deleted? You may also ask how and why someone would want to delete your music. A newly discovered worm W32.Deletemusic deletes all .mp3’s from the compromised computer. The risk level is low, but can be devastating to the music collectors if infected. Removal instructions can be found on the web. This type of worm is not the first of its kind.  Nopir-B  and Erazer also tried to delete .mp3’s and other music/movie file formats. Nopir-B poses as a DVD copying software. Erazer-A targets peer-to-peer folders and disguises itself with names such as games.exe and officecrack.exe. It seems to me that these trojans are written by the music companies in respose to piracy. Sophos‘ senior technology consaltant Graham Cluley, states “The Erazer Trojan targets internet users it believes are involved in piracy, but fails to discriminate between the true criminals and those who may have MP3 music files or home movies that they have created themselves. Malware is not the way to fight internet piracy.” What do you think?
